Why This Matters Now More Than Ever

Sharing Wild Spaces

Bears and people are sharing landscapes at unprecedented levels, more than ever before in our natural history. As human urban and industrial development continues and as outdoor recreation grows, bear populations continue to recover and expand in many ecologies and wildlife ranges shift, the likelihood of an encounter increases – making bear awareness a fundamental wilderness skill so we can reduce the frequency and number of bear-human encounters and conflicts and in doing so help in the process of bear conservation.

There is a meaningful difference between feeling safe and actually being safe. This certification course bridges both. It’s not just bear safety, it’s also bear savvy. When you understand bear behaviour, read the signs around you, have good prevention and avoidance protocols and know how to respond to encounters, you move through bear country with genuine calm — grounded in skill, not just optimism

In the wilderness, there are no guarantees — but there are choices. Equipping yourself with bear safety knowledge means you're not leaving your wellbeing to chance. Preparedness is empowerment. Every skill you build is a layer of real, practical protection. If you are confronted with a predatory or defensive bear attack, you need a reliable game plan to maximize your chances of survival. You don't rise to the occasion, you fall to the level of your training.

Bears are keystone species and learning about their ecology and understanding their habits deepens your appreciation of the whole ecosystem. Learn how to read the landscape and to accurately interpret tracks, scat, digging, and other signs that tell the story of who you are sharing wild spaces with.

Humans are frequently careless when it comes to our behaviour in wild places. When we store food properly, maintain distance, and respond calmly to encounters, we reduce the risk of conflict — and keep bears wild and safe on the landscape where they belong.

Bears evoke more fear in humans than any other animal in the North American wilderness and this fear of bears is often rooted in the unknown. When you understand bears , what triggers defensive and other behaviour, and how encounters may become dangerous, that fear transforms into respect — and respect is a far more useful companion on the trail.

Know before you go!

Most people don’t know how to safely handle a bear encounter. Do You?

Your personal safety is about preparedness, not luck. Be prepared before you go into bear habitat, don't leave it to chance.

Many potentially risky encounters and conflicts between humans and bears can be prevented and avoided when people become bear savvy by developing a clear understanding of bear behaviour, and learn how to appropriately assess and respond to a spectrum of possible encounters, ranging from peaceful to aggressive.

We’re committed to reducing human-bear conflict and protecting both people and wildlife through expert education and practical tools. Whether you’re in the backcountry or on the job, we’ll help you become truly bear savvy. Learn to coexist safely and responsibly in wild spaces.
